Prague, 8 July 2021 - Canon Europe today announced new firmware updates for the EOS R5¹, EOS R6 (firmware v1.4) and EOS-1D X Mark III (firmware v1.5). With the latest updates that respond to user feedback, these cameras are becoming powerful devices for professional video recording.
Based on suggestions from Canon users, the new firmware for the EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III brings new possibilities for photography and video recording.
Cinematographic quality video recordings
The new firmware version makes available the highly sought-after Canon Log 3 (C-Log 3) gamma curve, which was already available on the EOS R5, now also on the EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III. Canon Log 3s renowned gamma curve expands the dynamic range and offers a wider range of color space options, so you can achieve exceptional video quality that rivals Hollywood-standard film cameras. This logarithmic gamma curve also improves the compatibility of these models with cinematographic production processes and makes it easier to match the color to the recording from Canon Cinema EOS cameras. Simplified video processing workflows In addition to the C-Log 3 curve, these firmware updates for all affected models now allow simultaneous recording on two memory cards. Therefore, users can write the same video file - with the same resolution, frame rate and encoding - to both cards at the same time. This means that in case one card is damaged, there will be a backup copy2.
For the EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R5, the update also brings support for the new CFexpress VPG400 memory card standard, which enables more reliable recording with a minimum write speed of 400 MB / s. This is important when shooting in 8K or RAW format. Compatible with cinematographic products The upcoming EOS R5 firmware update will bring compatibility with Canon servo-powered CN-E18-80mm T4.4L IS KAS S and CN-E70-200mm T4.4 L IS KAS S zoom lenses. This will add versatility and allow users to create higher level. With the new firmware, EOS R5 users can control exposure, focus and zoom from the camera body, but also start button recording on Canon Cine servomotor zoom lenses. Compatibility also applies to Canon EOS and Camera Connect software, so users can easily integrate the EOS R5 into any production process. The new EOS R5 firmware enables external full-format 8K ProRes RAW and 5K ProRes RAW cropped recording when connected to an Atomos Ninja V + recorder and in 5K ProRes RAW cropped recording with an Atomos Ninja V recorder. unrivaled image quality. With the Atomos Ninja V + recorder connected, the EOS R5 can record in 8K resolution at 30 fps. It offers film and video cameramen new opportunities.
These professional recording formats also allow you to easily adjust the white balance and ISO sensitivity during processing. The latest firmware updates make key video recording features and capabilities available and take audiovisual content creation to a new level.
